Fans left fuming at UEFA's Champions League Team of the Season as star names miss out

Fans were not happy.

Fans were left disappointed with UEFA's official Champions League Team of the Season - bemoaning the absence of several star performers from the competition.

Manchester City lifted their first top European crown on Saturday evening after defeating Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul.

Pep Guardiola won the trophy for the first time in 12 years, with his Barcelona side having defeated Manchester United at Wembley in 2011.

After the game, as is customary, UEFA revealed their Team of the Season, as selected by their Technical Observer panel.

The lineup, which is in a 4-3-3 formation, is spearheaded by City star Erling Haaland, whose 12 goals saw him top the goalscoring charts.

He is one of seven City players to make the team, with final goalscorer Rodri, John Stones, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne all included.

Fellow finalists Inter have two representatives, with defensive duo Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco both picked.

And the team features players from only three club sides, with Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior and Thibaut Courtois rounding out the XI.

As with any team selection such as this one, however, you can't please everyone - and plenty of fans took to the comments to explain why other players should have been picked.

Fans react to Champions League Team of the Season

On Instagram, one fan advocated for the selection of Inter stopper Andre Onana: "Onana eight clean sheets [this season] what a joke."

Another stated a different goalkeeper should have been in: "Ederson robbed."

While another fan added: "Acerbi ahead of Bastoni, Gundogan ahead of Stones and Dias will be my captain."

There were other shouts, with fans arguing for the inclusions of AC Milan forward Rafael Leao and Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella.

On Twitter, meanwhile, one City fan said: "The same Courtois who held five to us? Ederson conceded less than that in the whole competition [four] with a 90% save percentage. And won it."

Another added: "Well deserved for City but I think Gundogan should have made it."

And a third exclaimed: "No Akanji?"
