Unai Emery appointed as Aston Villa's new manager

Unai Emery appointed as Aston Villa's new manager

Unai Emery is back in the Premier League.

Aston Villa have announced the appointment of Unai Emery as the club's new head coach following the sacking of Steven Gerrard.

Emery replaces Gerrard who was dismissed after Villa's crushing 3-0 defeat to Fulham in the Premier League last week.

The 50-year-old will officially take over from November 1 once his work permit formalities are completed.

The experienced manager brings a wealth of experience to Villa Park, having managed some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

He's managed the likes of Valencia, Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain not to mention Arsenal.

The Spaniard has enjoyed notable success in his managerial career, winning the Europa League a staggering four times. He's won the competition with Sevilla on three occasions and won it with Villarreal in 2021.

He also won the league title and domestic cups as PSG boss.

Emery joins from Villarreal, with Villa set to pay his £5.25 million release clause.

Fabrizio Romano reports that he'll earn £6 million per year.

Speaking before the official announcement, Jamie Carragher praised Emery, saying he's a big fan of the manager.

"I think it would be a fantastic appointment. I’m a huge fan of Unai Emery," he said on Monday Night Football.

"If you look at his career, he’s had a lot of his success with teams just below the elite, those teams almost fighting with the bigger clubs.

"It didn’t go well for him at Arsenal but you look at what he did at Villarreal, Europa League winners, pushed Liverpool in the Champions League as well.

"No disrespect but he’s not the type of manager for Barcelona or Real Madrid but he can compete against big teams with more money."

Villa currently occupy 15th place in the table and have 12 points on the board.

After beating Brentford 4-0 last weekend, the Midlands side resume their league campaign at Newcastle United on Saturday.

Emery is then expected to take charge of his new team's game against Manchester United on November 6.
