Arsenal make first step to sign versatile Italy star - he could be an ideal addition

Arsenal make first step to sign versatile Italy star - he could be an ideal addition

Arsenal have made an enquiry for Roma and Italy star Nicolo Zaniolo, according to reports.

Arsenal have made an enquiry for Roma and Italy star Nicolo Zaniolo, according to reports, amid a suspected injury suffered by Reiss Nelson.

Nelson suffered the injury during Saturday's 2-0 friendly defeat against Juventus - the final non-competitive game for Arsenal before they return to Premier League action on Boxing Day.

It comes as a blow to club and player, with Nelson having featured in each of Arsenal's four friendlies during the World Cup break.

The 23-year-old will have been hoping to use his displays, which included a goal against AC Milan last week, to kickstart a resurgence upon the return of competitive football.

For now, he may have to spend time on the sidelines, although it is unclear as to how long. Arsenal are still waiting to discover the extent of the suspected hamstring problem.

Manager Mikel Arteta said after the game: "We don't know the extent of the injury. The fact he had to leave the pitch immediately is not good news, especially for someone like Reiss, who is really powerful and fast.

"Let's see what happens. We know what we have to do and that hasn't changed the plans."

Arsenal are likely to be active in January regardless of recent injury issues, but reports suggest they have their eye on an Italy star for the summer window.

Arsenal 'enquiry' for Zaniolo

According to Italian outlet Roma Giallorossi, Arsenal have submitted an enquiry for Zaniolo as they look to add to their midfield options.

The Italy international is one of the top stars for Jose Mourinho's side, but has only scored one Serie A goal in 11 appearances this term.

The 23-year-old has had several largely injury-free seasons after twice suffering an ACL injury, and showed his quality by netting six goals and providing three assists during Roma's run to the Europa Conference League trophy last season.

Zaniolo is capable of playing in attacking midfield and on either side, which could make him the perfect versatile option for the Gunners.

The same outlet claims the Gunners will likely make an offer for the player in June. Therefore, whilst he may not be an immediate replacement for Nelson, he could replace the 23-year-old if Arsenal do not renew the player's contract, which expires this summer.

Should his injury prove to be serious, it may force the Gunners to try and sign Zaniolo in January.
