Mikel Arteta is reportedly reconsidering his pursuit of Declan Rice, following a disappointing few weeks in the Premier League.

The Gunners looked to have one hand on the trophy earlier this month, but three consecutive draws against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton, followed by a painful 4-1 defeat to Manchester City has put a serious dent in their title hopes.

Regardless of their finishing position, Brighton's 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest has sealed Arsenal's Champions League destiny, with the Seagulls mathematically unable to catch them.

In preparation for a busy European schedule next season, Arteta had identified West Ham midfielder Rice as his priority target this summer.

The 24-year-old's current deal is due to expire in 2024, and having turned down multiple offers to stay at the club, West Ham will know they must cash in this summer to avoid losing him for free next year.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Rice. However, the latest reports have cast a summer move into doubt.

Arteta set to reconsider transfer strategy

Arteta was allegedly keen to add strength and depth to his midfield this summer, eyeing both Rice and Moises Caicedo as potential additions.

The Gunners saw two bids rejected for Caicedo in January, but are expected to reignite their interest this summer.

However, following Arsenal's poor defensive displays recently, The Sun claim that Arteta may adjust his focus to other areas of his team.

The report states that they are now 'exploring ways to finance moves for two more defenders and possibly another winger'.

Indeed, William Saliba's absence has left a gaping hole in Arsenal's back four, with many attributing the team's dip in form to the Frenchman's injury.

As a result, Arteta could stick a pin in his pursuit of Rice and Caicedo, with the pair expected to break the bank this summer.

Rice could cost as much as £100m, while Brighton rejected Arsenal’s £60m bid for Caicedo in the winter, suggesting they would need to offer more this time round.

Consequently, Arsenal are now looking at cheaper alternatives, with Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Leicester’s Youri Tielemans both on their radar.

Both players are out of contract this summer and could be available at a discount price. While Real Valladolid full-back Ivan The report also details Arsenal's interest in Crystal Palace centre-half Marc Guehi, who could provide useful cover for Saliba next season.
