Georginio Wijnaldum could make a shock return to the Premier League this month with Arsenal close to agreeing a loan move for the midfielder, according to reports.

Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer after failing to agree a new deal at Liverpool but has failed to establish himself in the French capital.

The 31-year-old admitted earlier this season that he is “not completely happy” at the Parc des Princes after struggling for game time under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Arsenal are now set to pounce and are close to agreeing a loan deal for the Netherlands international, according to FourFourTwo.

The Gunners are keen to sign a midfielder this month, with Thomas Partey [Ghana] and Mohamed Elneny [Egypt] leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins on January 9.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have also been linked with a move for their former midfielder.

Wijnaldum scored 11 goals in 40 games in a single season at St James' Park before moving to Liverpool in 2016.

He would go on to score 22 goals in 237 games for the Reds, winning both the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Anfield.

Speaking in October, Wijnaldum admitted his start at Paris Saint-Germain has been "difficult" but vowed to turn his form around.

“I can’t say I’m completely happy, because the situation is not what I wanted,” he told NOS.

“But that’s football and I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around.

“I have played a lot in recent years, was always fit and also did very well. This is something different and that takes getting used to.

“I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens. It is very difficult.”
