Sergio Aguero predicted Arsenal would mount title challenge back in August but got two things massively wrong

The Argentine predicted a very different title race.

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero predicted Arsenal would mount a title charge this season, but got two things massively wrong.

Arsenal are on course to win their first Premier League title in almost two decades.

A thrilling 2-2 draw against Liverpool has left them six points clear at the top of the table and with just eight games left to play, he Gunners' destiny is in their own hands.

Aguero saw this coming though, predicting Arsenal's meteoric rise to prominence way back in August.

However, the retired Argentinan got a couple of other things blazingly wrong.

What did he say?

Aguero, who won the Premier League five times with Manchester City, predictably placed his old club as favourites for the 2022/23 trophy.

But the 34-year-old also labelled Arsenal contenders, citing their excellent form in pre-season which saw them lift the Emirates Cup after a 6-0 victory over Sevilla.

Although Aguero included Liverpool and Chelsea on his list, suggesting they were both in serious competition for the title.

Speaking to Stake.com, Aguero said: "My candidates are Manchester City, which I think can repeat, Liverpool, Chelsea and I add Arsenal, which has strengthened very well and has had great games in the pre-season.

"Everything will be very even, as it has been happening, but we will have to be attentive to Arsenal's performance, which has put together a great project with the help of Arteta and I think that this year they will give people something to talk about."

Both Liverpool and Chelsea have endured torturous campaigns in the Premier League, with neither side in contention for European football next season.

Jurgen Klopp's men were on the receiving end of a 6-2 aggregate thrashing by Real Madrid which saw them dumped from the Champions League.

While their hopes of qualifying for next year's competition are all but over, with the Reds currently languishing in eight place in the table, some 12 points adrift of the top four.

As for Chelsea, they have seen three managers take charge of the club during a tumultuous campaign which has seen them drop into the bottom half of the table.
