Ray Parlour picks Jorginho as Arsenal's Signing of the Year, he's only made 14 Premier League starts

Ray Parlour picks Jorginho as Arsenal's Signing of the Year, he's only made 14 Premier League starts

It's a controversial pick.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has made a strange call for Arsenal’s signing of the season.

While the Gunners’ season ended in disappointment, it’s been a campaign of tangible progress for the club.

Arsenal spent the year locked in a fierce Premier League title race with Manchester City. At one point they even had an eight-point lead over Pep Guardiola’s men, as the club looked to secure their first title in 19 years.

But despite having led the table for some 248 days, Mikel Arteta’s side ultimately fell short after a dismal April in which they picked up just three points in four games.

While they finished the season trophyless, Arsenal’s second-placed finish and Champions League qualification mark a season of tremendous progress.

And though Arsenal were without doubt improved by the signings of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer, Parlour has crowned another Gunners newbie as his Signing of the Season.

Jorginho as singing of the season?

According to Parlour, Jorginho is Arsenal’s signing of the season, despite the Italy international having only made 14 Premier League starts for the Gunners since his January move.

Jorginho made the switch to north London on the final day of the winter window, after Arsenal failed to secure a deal for Moises Caicedo.

Costing just £9.8million, the midfielder has no doubt proven to be a useful acquisition, but perhaps not played as prevalent a part in Arsenal’s success as Jesus, Zinchenko, or Leandro Trossard.

Nevertheless, Parlour told the Metro: “Jorginho has done a good job in midfield. He’s got good experience for the money [Arsenal paid].

“I’m going off the value of the players signed. Trossard has also been an excellent signing. Jesus leads the line very well.

“But probably for the money they spent and the experience they got, which they needed, as well as a backup in midfield, I would go for Jorginho. For the last two or three games he has been really good.

“You can’t buy experience. He knows what needs to be done to win trophies. Zinchenko has been excellent as well.”
