Arsenal squad reaction is telling as Gunners close in on Jorginho signing

Jorginho’s prospective move to Arsenal has gone down “very well” with the Gunners squad, according to David Ornstein.

Jorginho’s prospective move to Arsenal has gone down “very well” with the Gunners squad, according to David Ornstein.

Mikel Arteta expressed a desire to bring in midfield reinforcements this month after fringe player Mohamed Elneny suffered a knee injury in training.

In turn, the club have reportedly agreed a £12million deal with Chelsea for Jorginho, with the Italy international due to complete a medical in the coming hours.

The 31-year-old, whose deal at Stamford Bridge was due to expire in the summer, will reportedly sign an 18-month contract with the table toppers.

Arsenal’s interest in Jorginho sharpened after the Gunners saw two bids worth up to £70million turned down by Brighton for Moises Caicedo.

The Seagulls do not want to sell the 21-year-old unless they receive around £100million, given they are hoping to secure a European spot this season.

Arsenal squad’s Jorginho response

While the Arsenal fanbase has had a mixed response to the prospect of signing Jorginho, the reaction from the Arsenal players has been particularly telling.

According to the Athletic’s transfer guru Ornstein, the move has gone down “very well” among Arteta’s squad.

The journalist tweeted: “The feeling is the midfielder brings technical ability, tactical understanding, experience level ideal for a title bid.’

Ornstein added: “The word I’m hearing from inside Arsenal is that there is a lot of excitement from the players and staff about a very experienced player - a Euros winner with Italy at Wembley against England as we remember.

“He’s achieved a lot in the game in terms of trophies and played at an elite level and I think his technical style will fit in nicely with Mikel Arteta’s squad.

“Maybe he’s not quite what they were after in terms of that defensive six, but let’s see how it pans out.”
