Fan accidentally bets on Argentina to win rugby World Cup, thought he was in line to win £1,064

One punter thought he was onto a winner when he put a big stake on Argentina to win the World Cup, but it was a horrible gaffe.

A fan who thought he was onto a winner by tipping Argentina to win the World Cup actually bet on the South American side to win the rugby showpiece.

After tasting defeat in the opener against Saudi Arabia, Lionel Scaloni's side, inspired by talisman and captain Lionel Messi, have reached the final in Qatar.

They beat Australia in the round of 16, triumphed over the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals and made easy work of Croatia in a 3-0 win in the semi-finals thanks to a Messi masterclass.

Messi could close a glittering career for his country with a fairytale ending in his final game for Argentina if all goes well against holders France at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

Many did predict Argentina as the team to go all the way, including one punter who stuck £38 on them following up their Copa America triumph by becoming world champions.

As his slip shows, he got odds of 28/1 with Bet365 and was is line to win a whopping £1,064. However, there was one major problem - his bet was for Argentina to win the rugby World Cup and not the football tournament.

The rugby World Cup takes place in 2023 in France and will see South Africa try and defend their crown. Argentina are currently ranked 8th in the world, hence why you could get odds of 28/1 for them to win.

The bet has been shared by @LukeCarey1881, with the caption: "My mate thought he had Argentina to win the World Cup the whole tournament, I thought the odds were too good to be true, turns out he betted on the Rugby World Cup."

The tweet has quickly gone viral, with over 24,000 likes at the time of writing. And it's brought plenty of laughs on social media.

One user wrote: "Pure comedy."

A second commented: "Scenes if they manage to pull it off."

A third added: "In what world are you getting Argentina 28/1 anyway going into the Footy’s World Cup ahahaha."

Luckily for the punter he made the bet with bet credits and not actual cash but he's still had an absolute nightmare.
