Erik ten Hag provides injury update on Man Utd striker Anthony Martial

The injury could be worse than originally thought.

Erik ten Hag has confirmed provided a fresh update on Anthony Martial after it was confirmed he would miss the FA Cup final.

The 27-year-old suffered a muscle tear during the final game of the Premier League season against Fulham and it appears the injury could be more serious than first imagined.

His absence has left Ten Hag scrambling for alternatives in attack, having been United's first-choice striker in recent weeks.

Wout Weghorst is the other option, but the Dutchman has only scored twice since arriving on loan in January and has not found the net in his last 15 games.

Instead, Ten Hag may choose to deploy Rashford as a traditional number nine either side of Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho, just as he did against Fulham.

The Red Devils boss is in desperate need of a new striker this summer and his search could take on an increasing urgency following the latest news regarding Martial.

Ten Hag provides Martial injury update

Speaking to Manchester United's website, Ten Hag discussed Martial's injury, explaining “Yeah, it’s going to be a long one, but how long? We don’t know. We have to do more assessments.”

The Frenchman has scored nine goals across all competitions, although his season has been hindered by five separate issues, ruling him out of a total of 27 matches.

It would appear he is not a part of Ten Hag's future plans, with Tottenham striker Harry Kane emerging as United's priority summer transfer target.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would be willing to sell to a direct Premier League rival, with the 61-year-old having played hardball over negotiations in the past.

Either way, Ten Hag must sign a striker more reliable than Martial, who will feel as though most of his United career has been spent on the medical bench.
