A Young Fan Sprinted Down Pitch To Take Selfie With Wayne Rooney, The Commentator Was Shook

"I have never in all my life seen such a thing..."

A young Manchester United fan went to extreme lengths to get a selfie with Derby County manager Wayne Rooney this weekend.

It was an afternoon to forget for England's all-time top goalscorer. After a number of positive results in the Championship of late, the Rams fell to a disappointing 4-1 defeat against promotion-chasing Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Goals from Lee Buchanan [OG], Aaron Connolly, Matt Crooks and Duncan Watmore sealed an important win for Chris Wilder's side, who were in confident spirits following this month's FA Cup win against Manchester United.

Rooney will want to quickly move on after such a poor result, but he did manage to crack a smile in the latter stages of Saturday's defeat when a young fan sprinted across the Riverside pitch to get a selfie with the former Everton striker.

To his credit, the 36-year-old posed for a snap before guiding the supporter away.

"Oh look at this!" said the bemused commentator. "There's a kid, who has run down, for a selfie with Rooney in the technical area!"

Here is that hilarious footage below.

After managing to get a quick selfie, the young fan sprints down the touchline and back to his seat, with no stewards in sight.

Soccer Saturday commentator Sue Smith explained the bizarre situation to those watching at home as presenter Jeff Stelling chuckled away in the background. "Look, he's got away with it, which is absolutely fantastic. No harm done!" said Stelling.

"Although I'm not sure Wayne Rooney would have been in the mood to get a selfie..."

Have you ever seen anything like it?
