Manchester United and Liverpool are set to battle it out for the signature of French wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes this summer, according to reports.

The 18-year-old, who is widely considered as one of the world's top teenage talents, has attracted interest from all around Europe, but it is United that are said to be the frontrunner in landing the sought-after midfielder.

However, according to Anfield Central, Liverpool are now attempting to hijack United's deal, with Reds officials contacting Camavinga's agent, Jonathan Barnett, over a potential move.

Their report claims that Liverpool have had a "long, fruitful phone call" with Barnett and are "seriously considering" the young star as a possible transfer target this summer.

Barnett recently revealed how Camavinga has received "plenty of good offers" from clubs around Europe and hinted of a potential move in the future.

"Believe me we have a lot of offers for this year, a lot of offers, and good ones," he told Goal in May.

"I mean top, top clubs. We don't want to rush. There is the right time to move on and playing games is the most important thing at his age."

Marked as the next big thing in French football, Camavinga is the latest player to make a name for himself as a defensive midfielder.

Busting onto the scene in spectacular fashion as 16-year-old against Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, Camavinga was one of the best players on the pitch as Rennes upset the Ligue 1 giants with a 2-1 win at home.

Following the emergence of defensive midfielders in N'Golo Kante, Fabinho and Casemiro, Camavinga has shown tremendous promise in the middle of the park - averaging a total 2.8 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game.

And as a result of that stellar form, it comes as no surprise to see Manchester United and Liverpool both interested in signing the young prodigy.

Intriguingly, he has just one year remaining on his contract and is reportedly free to leave Rennes for around £35m this transfer window.

So, who will it be for Camavinga - United or Liverpool? For now, we will have to watch this space.
