George Russell's new Mercedes contract may still contain a detail that could pave the way Max Verstappen to join in the future.
After months of speculation, Mercedes have finally confirmed their driver line-up for 2026, sticking with Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Next season promises to be one of the most interesting in recent years, with changes to chassis and power unit regulations set to be introduced.
The transition has created genuine uncertainty within the paddock for both drivers and teams.

Despite that uncertainty, Mercedes have chosen to stick with the current line-up. However, they did not disclose the exact lengths of their contracts.

Team principal Toto Wolff said: "Confirming our driver line-up was always just a matter of when, not if. We wanted to take our time, handle the negotiations properly and make sure everyone, on all sides, was happy. I'm pleased we have done that.
"George and Kimi have proved a strong pairing and we're excited to continue our journey together. Our focus is now on the final six races of the year, as we fight for second in the Constructors' Championship, and onwards to 2026 and a new era in F1."

Despite Russell's new deal, Wolff would still be interested in signing Max Verstappen.
The four-time world champion remains under contract at Red Bull until 2028, but Wolff has repeatedly spoken of his admiration for the Dutchman
For now, the deal provides Mercedes with stability, with six races left in the season.
Russell heads into this weekend's United States Grand Prix high on confidence, following a convincing victory last time out in Singapore.

He said: "I am really proud to be continuing our journey together. Next year will mark my 10th since I signed with Mercedes back in 2017.
"It has been such a long and successful partnership with the team so far and I can't wait to see what lies ahead, particularly as we embark on regulation changes.
"We are all incredibly focused on making that a success and, for me personally, building on what has been my strongest season in F1 to date."

It has been a more mixed season for Antonelli, who is nearing the end of his debut campaign in Formula 1 after replacing Lewis Hamilton.
The 19-year-old Italian secured his first podium at the Canadian GP, but he struggled throughout the European stretch of the season.
He said: "I'm super-excited to be continuing with the team. I've learnt so much in my first season in F1, both in the good moments and the more challenging ones.
"Those have all made me stronger, not only as a driver but as a team-mate too.
