Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, have confirmed a huge change ahead of next weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix.

In recent races, the FIA have made headlines after controversial moments during races in Mexico and the United States.

Max Verstappen was handed a controversial 20-second in Mexico after forcing Lando Norris off track.

Verstappen then bounced back during the Brazilian Grand Prix with a vintage performance as he went from 17th place to win the race, putting him within touching distance of his fourth F1 title.

Ahead of next weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix, it has been claimed that FIA race director Niels Wittich has stepped down.

Wittich has been sharing the role with Eduardo Freitas since 2022 but it was suggested on Tuesday afternoon that he had vacated his role.

As reported by BBC F1 presenter Jennie Gow, a statement from the FIA read: "The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position as F1 Race Director to pursue new opportunities. Niels has fulfilled his numerous responsibilities as Race Director with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his commitment and we wish him the best for the future.

"Rui Marques will assume the role of Race Director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Rui brings a wealth of experience having previously served as track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, Deputy Race Director and Race Director in various championships. Most recently, he held the position of Formula 2 and Formula 3 Race Director."

However, as reported by The Mirror, Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater said some sources have indicated that Wittich did not resign, but was reportedly sacked.

He said on Sky Sports: "The official announcement of this from the FIA says that he has stepped down - multiple sources have told me that he has been sacked, that he has been removed from his position."

Meanwhile, Motorsport Magazine stated: "Wittich emphasizes when asked: "I have not resigned." According to information from Motorsport-Magazin.com, he was informed of his dismissal shortly before the public confirmation in Geneva."

With the Las Vegas race just around the corner, it has been made clear that a win would clinch Verstappen his fourth successive world title.

Currently, the Dutchman is 62 points ahead of his closest challenger, McLaren star Norris.

However, Red Bull are facing a huge fight to defend their constructors' title as they currently trail the likes of Ferrari and McLaren.
