Michael van Gerwen was 'punched multiple times' by rival with Luke Humphries revealing details of bust-up

The three-time PDC world champion became embroiled in a feud with a fellow player.

Darts' world number one Luke Humphries revealed that Michael van Gerwen once became embroiled in an altercation with a fellow darts player.

Humphries, 30, claimed in January that the 2025 World Championship finalist had the biggest ego in darts when speaking on the ‘Happy Hour’ podcast.

'Cool Hand' didn’t hesitate before he said: “Well, that's easy; Michael van Gerwen,” after being asked who had the biggest ego in the sport.

"He wears it really, really well,” he added.

“It kind of suits him in a weird way. He just kind of... I think it's a Dutch thing as well. They're kind of like that. He's got a great friend in Vincent. I think that Vincent's really good for him."

Vincent van der Voort, who is also a professional darts player, is a close friend of Van Gerwen, 35.

But the pair once came to blows, according to Humphries.

“Because I think there was a story he told me once, Vincent, that he's actually punched Michael a couple of times in the face," Humphries explained.

"Like punched him. Not like absolutely batter him. But I think the first time was really early, and then they became friends.

"And then, like eight years ago, I think Michael was getting a bit – his ego was getting a bit high – and Vincent just whacked him.

"Because I think he showed Vincent disrespect – and Vincent doesn't like that. He's one of the coolest people you'll ever meet, honestly. He's so straight-talking and so funny.

"We get on really well. He's a really good character. But, yeah, Michael has definitely got the biggest ego. Vincent had to give him a punch just to calm him down!"

In fairness to Van Gerwen, he has backed up his so-called big ego throughout his illustrious darts career having already secured 157 PDC titles including three World Championship crowns.

The 35-year-old will be keen to secure this season's Premier League having already won the competition on seven occasions.

And he is set to take face Chris Dobey at the 3Arena in Dublin, Republic of Ireland later this evening.
