As things stand, Manchester City are in the midst of a crisis at left-back, with Joao Cancelo being the side’s only viable senior option capable of operating in the role.

With the club choosing to sanction Oleksandr Zinchenko’s move to Arsenal without bringing in a replacement, the side are in desperate need of a reinforcement in the position.

However, the Premier League champions have been linked with the signature of RSC Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez for the past couple of weeks.

The 21 year-old’s name has constantly been doing the rounds, as it has been claimed that he could be brought in as a cut-price alternative to lend a helping hand to the side this season.

A new update has now emerged that is set to appease Manchester City fans’ fears about their ongoing worries at left-back, as it seems as if the youngster will don sky blue imminently.

As per the latest information provided by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have now reached a verbal agreement with RSC Anderlecht over the signing of Sergio Gomez for a fee in excess of €15 million.

It has also been revealed that the Spaniard now has a strong chance of becoming a part of the club’s first-team squad.

However, Manchester City will assess whether the youngster is first-team ready, which still opens the door to a potential loan move to sister club Girona.

Elsewhere, Pol Ballus and Sam Lee of the Athletic have also reported that the former Borussia Dortmund starlet will now fly to England to undergo a medical and sign a contract with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Further details suggest that the Spanish under-21 international has been scouted extensively by the Sky Blues and is considered as a ‘high-potential developmental talent’.

Interestingly, it has also been stated that regardless of whether City plan on bringing in a more experienced option at left-back, this would not have deterred their pursuit for the player.

Sergio Gomez played under the tutelage of Vincent Kompany last term, emerging as the side’s Player of the Season, with five goals and 12 assists in the league last season.

Much like his predecessor in Oleksandr Zinchenko, the 21 year-old was also an attacking midfielder by trade before shifting to a left-back role.

While it is expected that a more established option joins Manchester City inevitably, it is testament to Gomez’s talent that the club deem him ready to compete for a first-team spot instantly.

In regards to the club's ongoing pursuit of a more senior option in the position, Jack Gaughan of the Daily Mail has also offered the latest in light of developments concerning Sergio Gomez.

It is claimed that while Manchester City are still on the search for another option at left-back, things have 'gone cool' in regards to VfB Stuttgart's Borna Sosa.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund's Raphael Guerreiro is also name-checked following reports from Sky Sports on Wednesday, with the defender having just one year left on his current deal with the Bundesliga giants.
