As Kalvin Phillips completed a £42 million move to Manchester City in the summer, his fairytale rise to the very top seemed like a story worth telling.

From leading his boyhood club Leeds United’s return to the Premier League in 2020, becoming one of the league’s best defensive midfielders and eventually joining the country’s finest side, the Englishman’s ascent has been incredible.

However, it’s safe to say that things have not turned out as expected for Phillips at City, due to his continued injury woes.

With an initial hamstring injury, the Leeds-born midfielder was ruled out in the Sky Blues’ 4-0 thrashing of AFC Bournemouth.

After returning on the bench in the side’s 3-3 draw against Newcastle, Phillips was soon after struck by another shoulder injury, which meant he missed Manchester City’s next three league fixtures against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

Returning off the bench against Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund as a substitute in the Champions League, it seemed like the 26 year-old was set to be ready to soon make his first start for the Blues.

However, the star was excluded from the matchday squad in City’s latest 3-0 win against Wolves, with a new revelation suggesting that he is now set to have surgery on a shoulder injury.

After suffering a nasty injury in last months friendly against Barcelona. the question amongst many City fans remains how Kalvin Phillips managed to dislocate his shoulder once again.

As per a report by Sam Lee, Pol Ballus and Phil Hay, it has been revealed that the number six picked up the latest injury in training last week, after what is believed to be regular contact during a practice match.

Considering Phillips first picked up the shoulder problem in the 3-3 draw against Barcelona in a mid-season friendly, this could well be a recurring issue.

The Englishman's 2021/22 campaign at Leeds was also plagued with injury, as a long-term shoulder injury continues to impact his playing time.

It has been reported that the Blues' summer signing will be out of action for a significant period, but is likely to return in time for the Qatar World Cup, permitting Southgate selects the 26 year-old.

The midfielder was named in the England bosses most recent squad, but has since been replaced by Jordan Henderson as a result of his latest injury set-back.

Ultimately, Manchester City will hope that a possible operation will end Kalvin Phillips’ shoulder struggles, and ensure he is fit and firing for the rest of the season upon returning to full fitness.
