Manchester City Goalkeeper Could Make Return To Football League Club This Summer

Rising Manchester City and England youth goalkeeper James Trafford could be set for a return to League One ahead of next season.

James Trafford - a 19 year-old rising goalkeeper who only made his England U21s debut against Kosovo this week following a maiden call-up - spent the second-half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at the University of Bolton Stadium following a temporary move from Manchester City in January.

The teenager kept seven clean sheets in his 22 appearances for Bolton in an impressive spell in League One, with the teenager's performances between the sticks key to Ian Evatt’s side's flourishing finish to the season.

The Wanderers ultimately finished ninth in League One, though were unbeaten since mid-March and won their final four matches of the campaign - finishing the season with a 4-2 win over Fleetwood Town.

Many expect the Lancashire club, who were previously in the Premier League, to aim towards another promotion next season, and journalist Alan Nixon claims that the Wanderers may be able to call upon James Trafford - with Manchester City potentially open to allowing another loan move.

The 19 year-old refused to comment on his future during an interview in April, and was one of two Manchester City loanee goalkeepers to shine in the English third division last season.

“To be honest I haven’t had any real discussions and I am going to leave it to (Manchester) City, Xavi Mancisidor (Goalkeeping coach), my agent, and revisit things at the end of the season,” said the teenager.

Journalist Alan Nixon now claims that the Premier League Champions could allow James Trafford to return to the University of Bolton Stadium again next season, off the back of his enjoyable and successful loan spell.

Trafford is yet to make his first-team debut for Pep Guardiola, though the England U-21 debutant has been an unused substitute on six occasions for the Premier League Champions.

Elsewhere, Manchester City are almost certainly set to look towards securing the futures of some of their other rising academy talents, including James McAtee - who is attracting significant interest from Championship sides Swansea City and Huddersfield Town.

Manchester City also confirmed the signing of 21 year-old Norway international Erling Haaland on Monday morning, with the striker stating that joining the Etihad Stadium is made even more special by his lifelong support for the club and his family connection through his father's playing career around the turn of the century.
