Retired Mexican boxer Israel Vasquez will undergo an operation to remove his damaged right eye.

The unfortunate news comes via ESPN Deportes as they claim he will have his eye operated replaced with a prosthesis.

Vasquez retired with a very respectable 44-5 including 32 stoppages inside the distance, and was the former super-bantamweight champion of the world though will likely be remembered for his classics with compatriot Rafael Marquez.

Following an accumulated damage to his eye, it was believed he had two choices; wait for the eye to "dry out" or have it removed replaced with a prosthesis. He opted for the latter as he awaits for the operation.

During this tough time he sent out a post on Twitter thanking the support he has received.

As expected, tributes have been flooding in:

'Magnifico' epitomises a true Mexican Warrior.
