Remembering When Mike Tyson Almost KO’d His Charity Opponent With His Trademark Right Hook

Remembering When Mike Tyson Almost KO’d His Charity Opponent With His Trademark Right Hook

Mike Tyson came shockingly close to knocking out a charity opponent during a four-round exhibition fight in 2016.

The 53-year-old boxing legend had previously struggled with his finances and held 'Mike Tyson's World Tour' to secure extra funds to elevate his money woes.

And 'Iron Mike' held an exhibition bout against a former training partner, Corey Sanders, at the 6,000-seater Chevrolet Centre and fans could tune in via pay-per-view.

Tyson was far from the ruthless boxer he was in his prime, but the boxing legend still had the power to take down his opponent.

Despite putting on a spectacle for paying fans, the 'Baddest Man on the Planet' pulled off one of his trademark right hooks in the early rounds of the fight and caught Sanders on the chin.

Sanders, unsurprisingly, lost complete balance and looked certain to hit the canvas, only for Tyson to intervene and help him remain on his feet.

And boxing fans watching the footage praised him for his ability and were convinced he could come out of retirement for another fight at the time.

YouTube user Light Free posted: "Mike Tyson never meant to hit him that hard, but those fighting instincts will never leave him. Held him up after connecting, Mike Tyson is not a bad man."

While J. Clint Lewey wrote: "I bet that guy was laying them in pretty good and Mike just needed to remind him who had a boxing video game named after him."

Another fight fan added: "Bring him out of retirement. He could still give today's heavyweight clowns a run for their [money]."

A fourth added: "Look at the foot movement as Sanders pushes out a lazy left jab, Tyson slips it and steps in with the right hand. Absolute class."

The former undisputed heavyweight champ admitted at the time that he had blown more than $300m and was bankrupt.

"If I don't get out of this financial quagmire, there's a possibility I may have to be a punching bag for somebody," he said.

"The money I make here isn't going to help any of my bills really from a tremendous standpoint, but I'm going to feel better about myself.

"I'm not going to be depressed."
