Reece James has agreed terms over a new long-term deal at Chelsea, which will see him become the highest paid defender in the club's history, according to reports.

The 22-year-old is one of Chelsea's stand-out performers and his importance has been highlighted in recent weeks, with the Blues struggling during his absense against Southampton.

James has featured both on the right of a back three and at wing-back this season, but the arrival of Wesley Fofana is expected to see the England international push forward and play the majority of matches in his natural wing-back position.

With a goal and an assist in four matches this season, James will be looking to beat last season's record.

Last season, James scored six goals and registered 10 assists in a fairly injury hit campaign.

With his fine performances attracting the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea have been keen to secure his services for the foreseeable future.

It was previously reported that Todd Boehly was keen to tie James, Mason Mount and Armando Broja down to bumper seven-year deals to keep the young stars at Chelsea.

Broja netted a six-year bumper deal on Friday, with the first of the youngsters tied up for the future.

And now, James could be next in line for a contract extension and pay rise.

As reported by Simon Johnson of The Athletic, the deal will see James become Chelsea's highest ever paid defender.

The new multi-year contract is set to be officially announced within the next few days as James has agreed on new terms.

It is reported that the talks with the wing-back progressed at a rapid rate this week, with him set to be rewarded for his impressive rise in football.

James was one of the lowest paid players at the club before being handed this new deal.

This pay rise will now see him handsomely rewarded for his growing stature in the game, touted as one of the best right-back's in world football.

The new Chelsea owners were keen to act quickly amid interest from Real Madrid.

It remains to be seen as to who will be handed extensions next, with the likes of Mount and Edouard Mendy previously thought to be in contract talks.

Chelsea fans will hope that the deal can keep James at the club for the foreseeable future.
