Graham Potter told to make Chelsea presence and impact after Blues appointment

Graham Potter told to make Chelsea presence and impact after Blues appointment

New Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been instructed to make impact and show presence after his appointment.

New Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been instructed to make presence and impact at Stamford Bridge following his appointment.

The Blues announced on Thursday afternoon that Potter had been made head coach after Thomas Tuchel was sacked just the day before.

He arrives from Brighton & Hove Albion after starting the season superbly with the south-coast side.

The contract agreed is for five-years and the new ownership at Chelsea are keen to hold onto him for the long run.

It is a different appointment from what the west London outfit would tend to go for.

Potter has not previously managed a team that have been in the Champions League and now he is stepping into a top-level job.

The choice highlights how Chelsea have broken away from the traditional approach former owner Roman Abramovich would take.

Todd Boehly and the consortium are putting faith in a manager on the rise and one who has truly earned the opportunity.

Adam Newson reported that fresh eyes and ideas are wanted as the owners are attempting to create a new culture at Stamford Bridge.

Potter will bring this and although many Chelsea fans will be disappointed to see the back of Tuchel, the new man has an exciting future ahead of him.

The 47-year-old has even received some words of advice from Blues legend Gus Poyet.

Revealed: How much Graham Potter’s huge five-year Chelsea contract is worth

Speaking to Midnite, he said: "Potter needs the impact, he needs to show the players a coaching presence and he needs to make sure the players know what he wants from them."

Touching on the Englishman's experience, Poyet added: "I'm not bothered about that, Potter has been in the Premier League for a few years, it won't be a problem at all."

He added: "Potter will need luck, like sometimes when a shot goes in off a post, that can change the situation for the next two months in a massive way."

He was expected to be taking charge of his first game as Chelsea head coach on Saturday against Fulham but this has changed.

The Premier League made a statement on Friday stating that all games would be postponed to pay respect to Queen Elizabeth II who sadly passed away on Thursday, aged 96.

This will give Potter more time to prepare for his first game, which is now on Wednesday in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge against Red Bull Salzburg.

Poyet continued: "If they start well and start winning, the players will be convinced within five minutes.

"If you don't win, depending on the characters of the players, it could take longer.

"But Chelsea already have the three at the back system ready for Potter, like how he played at Brighton, he'll have very experienced players."
