Chelsea make major Christopher Nkunku transfer decision as RB Leipzig star undergoes medical ahead of 2023 move

Christopher Nkunku has undertaken a medical with Chelsea ahead of a proposed transfer next summer.

Christopher Nkunku has undertaken a medical with Chelsea ahead of a proposed transfer next summer, according to reports.

The 24-year-old penned a new two-year contract extension in June to extend his deal until 2026, which includes a €60 million release clause that is valid from the summer of 2023.

He was the subject of interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and other clubs but remained in Germany following his new deal.

However, work has already begun for a transfer next summer with the France international likely to be on the move.

As reported by BILD in Germany, shortly before the end of the summer transfer window, Nkunku had a secret medical check-up with Chelsea near Frankfurt.

A Chelsea orthopedist was in attendance during the cardiological medical check.

It was not for a transfer in the summer, but for next summer.

Claims in Germany have now been backed up by Matt Law of The Telegraph who confirms Nkunku did have a medical with the Blues.

Chelsea have just sold Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig which will have seen the club strike up a positive relationship, no doubt helping Graham Potter’s side’s chances of landing Nkunku next summer.

The new owners backed former Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel heavily in the summer transfer window. It saw them spend in excess of £250 million, a record spend for a single window.

Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Denis Zakaria and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were all acquired, as were Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina.

Nkunku would be a major coup for Chelsea if they were able to land him for €60 million in 2023.

They have had uncertainty in attack with the futures of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech unclear.

Kai Havertz will have two years left on his current deal at the end of the season and a decision will have to be made by Chelsea over whether they extend or cash in n the Germany international.
