Why Chelsea’s Pre-Season Clash Against Charlotte FC Was Delayed

The reason why Chelsea’s pre-season clash against Charlotte FC is delayed has been revealed.

The reason why Chelsea’s pre-season clash against Charlotte FC is delayed has been revealed.

The Blues were set to kick-off at 12:30am (UK) in North Carolina for their second match of pre-season.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are currently training in Orlando, Florida, as they have already faced Club America in Las Vegas.

The Blues had named their starting line-up for the clash, with it revealed that Kepa Arrizabalaga and Timo Werner had not travelled with the squad.

However, the match was delayed, with Chelsea releasing an official statement explaining the reason why.

The official club website wrote: “Severe weather conditions around the stadium forced a late start to Chelsea's game vs Charlotte. The match was due to kick off at 7.30pm local time, 12.30am UK time. A new start time will be advised.”

Charlotte FC also provided updates on the severe weather, taking to Twitter.

They wrote: “Severe weather and lightning remains in the area and shelter in place is still in effect. Gates are still closed. We will provide further updates when available.”

Chelsea boss Tuchel was expecting a tough game against the MLS side, who sit 8th in the table mid-way through their season.

Ahead of the game, the Chelsea head coach admitted: “Given the fact it's maybe not so often they play against big European teams, I think the players, team and coach will show their best face, mentality and performance.

“I am sure they will prepare in a very serious way and will not see it as a friendly match. That is how I would handle it.”

The German continued to admit that it is difficult to predict things in pre-season, with the Blues clearly unable to predict the weather conditions in North Carolina affecting the match.

"In pre-season, it's difficult to predict,” he continued.

"Maybe Charlotte gives players a chance that are maybe in the shade or guys who want to make an impression in their league campaign. I simply don't know it.

“In the end, pre-season is 99 percent about your own team, own development, finding your own form. That is where the focus will be."

The Blues will face Arsenal in their final game of the pre-season tour before returning to Europe, where they will take on Udinese in Italy.

Tuchel will be hoping to make additions to his side before they return to Cobham to conclude pre-season as the Blues look to compete at the top of the Premier League next season.
