Steve Bruce has been sacked by mid-table Championship side Aston Villa, according to Sky Sources.

Bruce had been at Villa since 2016 and took them to last year's Championship play-off final, however, they lost 1-0 to Fulham.

The Villains are mid-table after 11 games as they have only won three times so far, drawing six and losing twice.

The Midlands side threw away a 2-0 lead against rock-bottom Preston North End last night as James Chester was sent off.

Louis Moult put the visitors 3-2 ahead with only four minutes left, but Yannick Bolasie equalised one minute into added time before Glenn Whelan missed a penalty to win it for Bruce's side 96 minutes in.

Bruce had a cabbage thrown at him from the crowd following his sides poor performance. The 57-year-old was fuming following the incident, saying: "Unfortunately, it sums up the society we are in.

"To say it's disappointing is an understatement for a club like this. It was before we had even started. "The most disappointing thing for me is that they have been on my back since the defeat at Sheffield United. That was after five games and we had just come from a play-off final.

"I can't do anything about that. All I can do is try and get on with my job to the best of my ability under difficult circumstances. "Every decision I make is questioned. That becomes difficult and frustrating, for sure."

'Cabbage Gate' doesn't end there as the police are investigating the incident and are looking for the vegetable throwing culprit while he is still ripe.

As for replacements, John Terry is currently just 3/1 to take over, while former favourite Thierry Henry has been pushed out to 7/1.

Terry joined the Championship side from Chelsea last season and captained them to the play-off.

It was rumoured in the summer that Arsenal legend Henry had agreed to take over from Bruce, however, nothing came from the allegations.
