ODDSbible Golf: US Open 2017 Preview

We've ruled DJ out already...

Erin Hills is a relatively young course, having only opened in 2006. So we can't take any past course form into consideration.

It's a case of who's in form, who does the course suit, and who has the right mentality to deal with the demands of a US Open. A major like no other.

I ruled Dustin Johnson out of The Masters before his injury, and due to that injury and his lack of playing time since, I'm ruling the favourite out again.

Win Outright (Each-Way)

Louis Oosthuizen - 50/1 Coral (8 places, 1/5)

Oosthuizen is in decent form at the moment having finished second at The Players Championship last month. Despite not winning a major since his triumph at The Open in 2010, he boasts 4 other top 10's, including at the US open.

The need to be accurate off the tee and clever around the greens will be key this week, both of which are key elements of his game. His overall record at majors is a bit hit and miss. It's almost a case of he's either right in the mix, or misses the cut, there's rarely a middle ground.

A solid first two rounds will see him reach the weekend, and then I expect him to make a challenge.

Branden Grace - 50/1 Coral (8 places, 1/5)

Like his fellow South African Louis Oosthuizen, Grace got a top 4 finish at the US Open in 2015 at Chambers Bay. One of the most testing tournaments in recent memory due to the conditions.

He's show he can tough it out when needed, and also has the winning mentality needed to win a tournament, having won 4 in the last 3 years, despite only turning pro in 2006.

His last 2 US Open finishes have been very respectable 4th and 5th places, and it would be no surprise to see him challenging again.

Justin Rose - 25/1 Coral (8 places, 1/5)

Rose came agonisingly close to winning his 2nd major at Augusta back in April, only to be pipped to the Green Jacket by Sergio Garcia. A former US Open winner, an Olympic Gold Medal winner, Rose has shown on more than one occasion he can deal with the toughest challenges in Golf.

Despite threatening to win on numerous occasions, that Gold medal was his most recent win, and he'll be desperate to put the painful memory of Augusta behind him.

Probably the toughest of competitors when it comes to the Brits, and more than capable of winning this week.

Emiliano Grillo - 150/1 SkyBet (8 places, 1/5)

An outside pick, but Grillo is one of the best ball strikers on tour. The need to hit fairways this week will be key, and anyone who does that consistently will stand a good chance of challenging.

He has no form to speak of in majors, but is an incredibly talented young golfer, and the back end of 2017 is sure to see him come to the fore.

First Round Leader

Jason Dufner - 50/1 (7 places, 1/5)

Dufner is a really erratic player, coming off the back of a recent win 2 weeks ago, he's back to some of his best form. It would be no shock to see him have a fast start, but like Hoffman at the Masters, curtail over the weekend.
