Martin O'Neill has stepped down as Republic of Ireland boss by mutual consent, while assistant manager Roy Keane has also left his position.

The resignation comes after the Republic of Ireland failed to win a single game in their UEFA Nations League group and, therefore, suffered relegation to Group C.

O'Neill and Keane have been in charge of Ireland since 2013 and led to them to Euro 2016, where they reached the first knockout round.

However, Ireland have only managed to win one of their last 11 fixtures and have failed to score in their last four outings.

They scraped a draw away to Denmark in their last game of the group on Monday night, however, they didn't even register a single shot on target.

Former Irish international Mick McCarthy is already odds-on with the bookmakers to replace O'Neill.

The bookies have McCarthy, also has also previously managed Ireland, the shock favourite at 8/13 to take over.

Stephen Kenny (3/1), Sam Allardyce (10/1) and Steve Bruce (10/1) follow in the betting.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "It looks as though ROI chiefs will turn to a familiar face in McCarthy when it comes to O'Neill's replacement."
