Manchester United may not be struggling for goals, this season, but Jose Mourinho could be tempted to venture back into the transfer market for a new striker, next summer.

The Portuguese coach will no doubt be delighted with the form of Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Henrik Mkhitaryan so far, this season, but if the words of ex-Napoli director Pierpaolo Marinoare to be believed, the former Chelsea manager could be tempted to boost his forward line even further.

Marino has claimed in a recent interview that Napoli's free scoring Belgian forward Dries Mertens is available for as little as €28 million after a clause was inserted in the new contract that he signed to keep him at the San Paolo until 2020.

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed that Mertens has a release clause in his contract that can be activated by foreign side, in a recent interview with Tuttosport.

"Manchester United are following Mertens very closely.

"He was an underestimated player until he played as a striker, now that he is a 'real No.9' he is kept under the eye of big clubs, because the €28 million clause a a low price, even if he's 30 years old."

Mertens enjoyed his best ever season, last term, scoring 34 goals in 45 games and has made a prolific start to the current campaign, hitting nine goals in 11 matches in all competitions.

At 30-years-old, Mertens would usually be considered too old for United to sign, but his form over the past year may convince Mourinho to alter his transfer policy.
