Pep Guardiola's plans for next season have taken a bit of a knock with Napoli confirming they have rejected a bid from Manchester City for Italian midfielder Jorginho, though City could return with better terms.

The whole of the Premier League is looking at ways they can improve and catch up with Manchester City after the champions scored more goals than anyone in a season and earned more points over 38 games too.

At time the Citizens looked genuinely unstoppable and until a loss to Liverpool in January it looked like a long with those records they would also match Arsenal by going the season undefeated.

The problem for the chasing pack is that knowing Pep Guardiola he isn't just going to standstill, after all he's got to chase Real Madrid for Champions League.

City are hoping to add a central midfielder to their squad with Yaya Toure having left and Fernandinho getting on a bit.

Their number one target is Napoli's Jorginho and City are expected to get him for around €50 million but today the club's president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed they'd rejected a bid.

Talking to Corriere dello Sport he said "Jorginho? I have refused an offer from Man City worth €45m plus €5m in bonuses."

Napoli came second last season in Serie A, with them having their best chance of winning the league in a long time, and will be desperate to keep hold of as much of their team as possible.

However it still seems likely that City will come back with improved terms for the midfielder and he will leave Italy for the Premier League.

City had originally been eyeing a move for Shakhtar Donetsk's Fred but the Brazilian looks set for a move to Manchester United instead.

Napoli are on the verge of making a signing themselves. It seems that Bologna forward Simone Verdi is set to join the Naples side.

Verdi scored 10 goals and made 10 assists last season and looked likely to move to Napoli in January but the deal didn't go through.

This will just be a bump in the road for City who are likely to do a deal for Jorginho soon enough.
