Manchester United Flop Memphis Depay Has A Very Ambitious Goal

The Dutchman did not have a good time in the Premier League but has been reinvigorated by life in France with Lyon.

'The next Cristiano Ronaldo', that's how people dubbed Memphis Depay when he moved from PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United. Whilst things didn't turn out well that hasn't stopped the forward dreaming big.

When Louis van Gaal signed Memphis Depay from PSV in the summer of 2015 for £25 million he beat off opposition from Arsenal, PSG and Liverpool to sign one of the most highly rated talents in European football.

But like the entire United side under Van Gaal the Dutchman flattered to deceive and he couldn't recapture the form that had made him Eredivisie's top scorer in his last season in Netherlands.

The 23 year-old would only last one full season at Old Trafford before being sold to Lyon by Jose Mourinho in the January transfer window last season. And the £17 million move for the winger did him the world of good.

In the second half of last season Depay scored five goals in 17 Ligue 1 games and at the beginning of this term he's scored two and put on three assists in six starts. Speaking to The PSV Supporter, via Goal, he spoke of his huge ambition to play for Real Madrid:

"I think I'm going to Real Madrid. Yes, that's a serious goal. What's happened so far, that's God, He helps me and brings me here."

In the interview the Dutchman also described his ambition as being 'realistic' and he clearly fancies that he could yet be the next Ronaldo and move to the Bernabeu in what would be a massive turnaround to his career.

Somewhat ironically if he did become good enough to move to Real a return to Old Trafford wouldn't actually be out of the question as the Red Devils have a buy-back clause on the player.

Considering how things went the last time he moved to a big club, arguably too quickly, Depay may not be in such a rush to move on from where he is right now.

But at 23 he has time on his side.
