Ben Mee reveals Brentford give players set-piece bonuses in fascinating interview

Brentford defender Ben Mee has revealed the surprise bonus structure the club has in place involving set-pieces.

Thomas Frank's side are easily the strongest side in the Premier League when it comes to set plays, with 16 of their 58 goals scored last season coming from those situations.

That equates to around 27.5 percent of their goals, with Brentford easily usurping Tony Pulis' Stoke City as the top set-piece side.

Jurgen Klopp once accused Brentford of "stretching their rules" and Mee, one of the dangerous players from set-pieces, has revealed that there are incentives in place for the Bees.

Brentford have changed the game with their use of data in football and look at 85,000 players. They place a huge emphasis on scoring from set pieces - which can included second phases - and are happy to reward their players accordingly.

"We have like a set-piece bonus, we're big on set-pieces and things like that so hopefully we'll get a few more goals this year," Mee said on the Fozcast.

"If we score from a set-piece within a certain time, at the end of the season the lads will get like a bonus.

"Brentford are big on stats and percentages of scoring goals. Set-pieces is a high chance of getting a shot on goal or a chance.

"We work off that and the end of the season we add it up from for and against. It gives you an incentive to go for it.

"The second phase could be part of the set play, within a certain amount of time - we sort of measure it within like 15 seconds it counts as a set-piece."

Mee had made the revelation after being asked about his performance on FPL, where he was the fifth-highest scoring defender last term.

The Manchester City academy product racked up 143 points in the game overall.
