'Has Ten Hag resigned yet?' - Piers Morgan asks how Man Utd manager can keep his job after Liverpool loss

Manchester United suffered a humiliating 7-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Piers Morgan has asked how any Manchester United manager can survive a performance and result like their "catastrophically dreadful" outing against Liverpool.

Just a week after lifting the Carabao Cup, Erik ten Hag's side were humiliated on Sunday as goals from Mohamed Salah [2], Darwin Nunez [2], Cody Gakpo [2] and Roberto Firmino sealed one of the worst defeats in their 145-year history.

After the full-time whistle, United legend Roy Keane warned that the "circus" is creeping back into the club while Gary Neville criticised midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who 'asked to be substituted' after Mohamed Salah made it 6-0 in the 83rd minute at Anfield.

Not even Erik ten Hag, the man that has transformed a team bereft of confidence, has avoided criticism, with journalist and TV personality Piers Morgan asking whether he deserves to keep his job at Old Trafford after such a humiliating defeat.

Morgan took to Twitter on Monday morning and asked his 8.4 million followers: "Has Ten Hag resigned yet? How can any Manchester United manager survive a performance & result that catastrophically dreadful?"

Here's how social media reacted to his post.

One fan commented: "Clear to see Piers is on the wind up, but at the same time it’s actually very weird how his obsession with Ronaldo comes in, plus the fact the bloke hasn’t a clue about football in any way whatsoever."

A second wrote: "He won a cup last week, is third and going well in Europe. It was a joyful, total spanking by LFC, but the subtext here that Ronaldo would have saved the day (based only on the fact that he gave Piers an interview and he’s therefore obsessed with him) is crackers."

A third commented: "I 8-2 remind what we did to you a few years ago. What happened to your manager then? Did he get the sack? Did he resign shortly after the defeat? Please take several seats."

A fourth added: "Did Arsene Wenger resign when he was smacked 8-2 by Manchester United in 2011?"

So how did Erik ten Hag react to the defeat? In his post-match interview, the Manchester United manager accused his team of being "unprofessional" during the Premier League clash.

“It is quite obvious, it was unprofessional," he said.

"First half, I think we were the better team – we created the better chances and had two one-on-ones with the goalie. Before half-time we made one organisational mistake and conceded a goal. We were in the game. It really surprised me after half-time, we gave the game [away] so quickly.

“The first two goals were defensive transition moments, the first was a turnover and the second was a counter, bad decisions and decisions on the ball. How we conceded the goals is really annoying. The third was a counter with unprofessional decisions – not following in, and then running in, moving forwards, giving space away in midfield, not tracking back.

“So then it is 3-0 and the game is lost, but as a team you have to stick together. That is what we didn’t do. It is a surprise for me, I didn’t see this from my team. I don’t think it is us. I don’t think it is Manchester United. It was really bad, really poor.”
