A remarkable upturn in fortunes...

Florian Thauvin did not do anything remotely memorable during his time in English football, playing just 13 Premier League games for Newcastle and scoring once against Northampton Town in 2015.

The Frenchman had arrived for a fee of £15 million from Marseille but ended up returning straight back on loan midway through the season, before a second loan spell was agreed for the following campaign.

Things picked up for Thauvin as he notched 15 goals in all competitions in 2016/17 - equalling his overall tally from his first spell with the club.

Yet, after signing permanently for the second time, he's transformed into one of the most productive players in European football. His output this season is genuinely insane.

His strike in the 2-0 Europa League semi-final first leg win over Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday night was his 23rd of the season. The 25-year old is a winger more than a number nine but has still been incredibly prolific in front of goal.

Additionally, Thauvin has laid on an impressive 17 assists for his teammates - giving him a total goal contribution tally of 40 in 48 matches

When you consider Newcastle's top scorer is Ayoze Perez with seven in all competitions, the season Thauvin is having is pretty phenomenal.

Sometimes players just work best in certain environments and it's definitely the case with Thauvin.
