Henderson Reveals How He Reacted When Liverpool Tried To Initiate Dempsey Swap

Extremely honest stuff.

Jordan Henderson has opened up on how he reacted when Brendan Rodgers tried to sell him at Liverpool.

In his earlier days at Anfield, following a big-money move from Sunderland, Henderson wasn't particularly well thought of by Rodgers, who had a different opinion to the man that signed him, Kenny Dalglish.

In fact, Rodgers was prepared to let the midfielder leave the club as a part of a deal for Fulham's American forward Clint Dempsey, who was a top target for the Reds' in circa 2012.

Having only just come into the club, the former Swansea boss told Henderson his situation hours before a Europa League qualifying game against Hearts - and it ended up bringing him to tears when he went back up to his room.

"Brendan called me in and said 'Listen, this is the offer" and he asked me what I thought," he said in a hugely honest interview with the Daily Mail.

"It implied to me that he would let me leave and it was up to me. I went back to my room. I shed a few tears. I ended up crying a little bit because it hurt so much. I had the game that night to think about it as well.

"I spoke to my agent and told him what had happened and I said I didn't want to go. I wanted to stay and fight and try and improve and try to prove the manager wrong. My agent agreed. I spoke to my dad. He was gutted but he backed my decision to stay and fight."

Dempsey ended up signing for Spurs and it's fair to say that the decision to stay put worked out pretty well for Henderson. Six years on, he is now leading Liverpool into their first Champions League final for 11 years, not to mention skippering England at the upcoming World Cup in Russia.

Whatever you may think of his footballing ability, the 27-year old has done tremendously well and deserves a whole lot of credit.
