Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos has shared an image of his brutal ankle injury picked up in Spain's opening match at the Tokyo Olympics.

One of La Roja's three overage players, the former Real Betis man started the 0-0 draw against Egypt but was forced off shortly before half-time when Taher Mohamed trod on his ankle.

VAR looked at the incident and it was decided that Taher's tackle was worthy of a yellow card. However, Ceballos was unable to carry on and understandably so after his ankle swelled up horribly.

The 24-year-old shared pictures of his ankle afterwards and it genuinely looks like a gold ball attached to his foot.

The Spanish FA say Ceballos has sprained his ankle and will now be assessed over the next 48 hours.

Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza also went off with an injury in the first half and Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente is desperately hoping the two blows aren't as serious as first feared.

"They are the greatest concern," he said, as per Metro.

"We are going to see if I'm wrong and they can be recoverable for the shortest possible dates. They are two injuries that could put them out for a while."

"Now we are going to see how the injuries develop today. They do not look good.

Spain have been placed in Group C and will face Australia and Argentina in their next two group games.

After spending two seasons on loan at Arsenal, Ceballos has returned to Real Madrid and is hopeful of being given a chance by Carlo Ancelotti in the Italian's second stint at the Santiago Bernabeu.
