In what may come as the least surprising managerial news of the season, Steve McClaren has been relieved of his duties as Newcastle United manager.
The move has been a long time coming and, following a 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend, the Newcastle board have decided to cut their losses with the former England manager and look elsewhere for someone to keep them in the Premier League.
The Bournemouth defeat leaves the Magpies second bottom, just a point from safety and with only two victories from their last nine matches.Ever since McClaren was deemed as being a dead man walking at the club, with supporters hardly enamoured with the ex-Middlesbrough and Derby County manager since his appointment, last Summer.
A meeting with managing director Lee Charnley this afternoon confirmed McClaren's dismissal, with Rafa Benitez many bookies' favourites to takeover at St. James' Park.
