Arsenal Legend Rips Into Arsene Wenger

"I don't see how he can keep his job"

The past week has felt eerily familiar for Arsenal fans, as their team begins to collapse as the calendar edges towards March. For one Gunners legend, another mid-season implosion should lead to Arsene Wenger's dismissal.

Paul Merson was one of the many Arsenal supporters who were outraged with their team's performance during the 3-2 defeat to a woefully under strength Manchester United team yesterday and the former Gunners midfielder has declared that should Wenger fail to lead his team to Premier League glory this season, then he should be let go.

Arsenal's misery was compounded by the fact that both Leicester and Tottenham won their respective games over the weekend, pulling them both that little bit clearer of the Gunners, who also suffered disappointment at the hands of Barcelona in midweek and during the frustrating 0-0 draw with Hull City in the FA Cup the previous weekend.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said:

"If Man City don't win the league and Tottenham or Leicester do then Arsene Wenger has to go.

"If you're sitting there telling those fans - loyal Arsenal fans - that they don't need any new players at the start of the season and then you don't win the league in front of Leicester or Tottenham then I don't see how you can justify it."

"If Man City win the league he can turn around and say 'they've got all the money in the world and can go and buy whoever they want, so would whoever I bought have made much difference?'

"But if Leicester or Tottenham win the league after he said they didn't need any players then I don't see how he can keep his job."

The Gunners face Swansea City on Wednesday night before making the trip to White Hart Lane on Saturday for what is set to be one of the biggest North London derbies in history with both sides needing a win in order to boost their Premier League title hopes.
