The Melbourne derby descended into chaos before being abandoned.

The Melbourne derby descended into chaos, leaving a player bloodied after being hit in the face with a bin.

Saturday's A-League showdown between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory was abandoned after shocking scenes as fans invaded the pitch and attacked a player.

Before the clash at the AAMI Park, supporters were planning to stage a mass walkout in protest of the league's decision to sell its Grand Final rights to Sydney for the next three years.

But the match didn't last longer than 21 minutes as supporters stormed the pitch after Tom Glover threw a flare into the crowd.

A flare was thrown onto the pitch, with the City goalkeeper throwing it back into the crowd, sparking wild scenes.

Fans entered the field of play and confronted Glover - with one supporter attacking him with a flare bin in disgraceful scenes.

The 24-year-old was left bloodied as he was escorted off the pitch. The game was subsequently suspended before later being abandoned.

City released a statement on social media, stating that Glover has likely suffered a concussion and was receiving treatment following the attack.

The club tweeted: "Update: Tom Glover is receiving medical treatment in the dressing room and likely has a concussion."

Football Australia also released a statement as they condemned the 'shocking scenes' in Melbourne.

"Following shocking scenes during the first half of the A-League Men’s match between Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC at AAMI Park on Saturday 17 December, where fans from the Melbourne Victory FC end entered the field of play, Football Australia match officials have abandoned the match in accordance with Law 5.3 of the Laws of the Game in order to protect the integrity of the match," it reads.

"Such behaviour has no place in Australian Football, with a full Football Australia investigation to commence immediately, where strong sanctions to be handed down."
