Mason Greenwood future set to become clearer as timeframe given for Man Utd return decision

Mason Greenwood future set to become clearer as timeframe given for Man Utd return decision

An update on Manchester United's investigation.

Manchester United could make a decision on the future of Mason Greenwood 'in a few weeks', according to a new report.

Greenwood was suspended by United in January 2022 after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October 2022.

The charges were discontinued in February 2023, with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stating that "a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction".

United subsequently announced that they would conduct an internal investigation into Greenwood before deciding on his future at the club. Since then, the club have not commented on the investigation, and the forward remains suspended while it is ongoing.

The Daily Star reported in May that, once a decision is reached, United will hold talks with stakeholders, including commercial partners, supporters and the women's squad, to gauge their views.

Now, a new report has outlined the progress that has been made in the investigation - and who will make the final decision on Greenwood's future at the club.

Mason Greenwood update

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are 'getting closer' to reaching a conclusion in their internal investigation, and a decision could come 'in a few weeks'.

It is added that no timeframe was placed on the investigation, but that the process 'has moved forward'. The final decision will be made by the Glazer family, in consultation with the club's chief executive, Richard Arnold. Arnold and Joel Glazer are responsible for the investigation, The Athletic report.

Manager Erik ten Hag commented on Greenwood during an interview with The Times prior to last weekend's FA Cup final against Manchester City. He said that the forward had "showed in the past that he is capable of doing that [front role]" in the past, but emphasised that it was not his decision over whether Greenwood returns to play for United.
