Why Marco Silva will be on the touchline for Bournemouth vs Fulham, despite his red card against Man United

Fulham boss Marco Silva was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh in Manchester United's 3-1 FA Cup comeback win at Old Trafford.

Marco Silva is expected to be on the touchline for Fulham’s forthcoming match against Bournemouth, despite picking up a red card against Manchester United.

Fulham suffered an epic second-half collapse against United in the FA Cup quarter-finals, despite Aleksandar Mitrovic firing Silva’s men into a shock lead at Old Trafford.

However, the FA Cup tie descended into chaos after referee Chris Kavanagh showed three red cards inside one minute to Fulham trio Willian, Mitrovic and Silva.

Willian was dismissed after a VAR check showed that he cleared Jadon Sancho’s strike off the line with his arm, while Mitrovic was sent off after a heated confrontation with Kavanagh.

Silva was also sent marching after the chaotic scenes and was forced to watch on as a Bruno Fernandes brace and Marcel Sabitzer’s flick-on finish sealed a 3-1 comeback win for United.

Mitrovic has since accepted his three-match ban and apologised to Kavanagh for his actions, with the Fulham star also volunteering to accept a club fine.

Willian and Mitrovic will now serve out their respective suspensions and are unavailable for Fulham’s first fixture since the international break.

However, the Bournemouth Echo reports that Silva will be present in the dugout for Fulham’s trip to the Vitality due to him requesting ‘a personal hearing with the FA.’

And the 45-year-old Portuguese manager’s request means that any potential ban from the United match has been delayed.

Following the incident at Old Trafford, Silva said in a statement: “I regret what happened, and I have spoken to Chris Kavanagh to apologise. He knows that I respect him and the job he has to do.

“Unfortunately, we did not see eye-to-eye on the day, but I recognise that he is one of the top referees in this country and I know that when our paths cross again, there will be mutual respect between us.

“I am sorry that I was not on the pitch to try to lead the team to what could have been an historic FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, but I am thankful for all the support I have received from Fulham fans over the last few days.”

Bournemouth host Fulham for their first Premier League clash since the international break on Saturday, with kick-off slated for 3pm UK time.
