Man Utd winger who regrets walking out on the club now plays in Greece

Man Utd winger who regrets walking out on the club now plays in Greece

He spent 18 months at Old Trafford.

If you're a Manchester United fan of a certain age, chances are you remember hearing about Zoran Tosic and his path to becoming the next big thing.

The former Serbia international was snapped up in a £6.9 million deal from Partizan back in 2009.

Tosic was just 21 years old at the time but was seen as one for the future in a United side brimming with talent.

Sir Alex Ferguson shoved him straight into the spotlight, with Tosic making his debut in an FA Cup fourth-round clash with Tottenham Hotspur. He replaced Cristiano Ronaldo late in the second half. No pressure there.

Tosic received the number 14 shirt, which signalled he'd be part of the first-team setup.

He would only make two more appearances in the rest of his debut campaign, both off the bench.

Ferguson believed in Tosic's ability, but the winger thinks he made the step up to Premier League football far too soon.

He told the Daily Record back in 2012: "It was such an exciting moment to go there and to meet Sir Alex. I had grown up as a United fan so to be working for the man who had brought so much success to the club was just unbelievable.

"However, there is a big difference between the Serbian and English leagues and when I arrived in Manchester, I discovered I was not yet ready for that level.

"I spoke with Sir Alex many times and he kept telling me I had quality and just had to keep working hard."

Tosic was limited to two League Cup appearances in his second campaign and decided a loan move would be best for his development.

Upon Tosic's return in 2010, he made a permanent move to CSKA Moscow, a decision he regularly thinks about.

He continued: "I wanted to play more games so went to Koln in Germany on loan and had a great six months there.

"When I came back to Manchester I was expecting to play more games for United but it didn’t happen. In the end, I wasn’t sure I was going to get the chance I felt I deserved so decided to change clubs.

"Even now I am always thinking about that moment. Maybe I shouldn’t have been so quick and should have worked longer to show Sir Alex.

"Maybe I should have stayed and fought for my place. This was Man United after all."

Now 36, Tosic plays for Greece Super League side Lamia, where he has so far made three appearances, scoring once.
