Liverpool face setback as club 'with the deepest pockets in world football' enter the race for midfield target

Liverpool are reportedly facing a transfer setback in pursuit of one of their main targets.

Liverpool target Mason Mount is reportedly of interest to Newcastle this summer, according to a new report.

The Chelsea midfielder is wanted by Jurgen Klopp in the summer transfer window, talkSPORT have claimed, with Liverpool said to be 'increasingly confident' of signing him from their Premier League rivals.

The Reds could look to rebuild their midfield this summer with several players out of contract in that area, and Mount is said to be seen as an 'ideal addition' to Klopp's side.

The England international's own future is currently unclear, with his current deal set to expire in 15 months' time.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is said to be handling talks over Mount's new contract, but with no agreement yet reached, it has been suggested that he could turn down a long-term stay at Stamford Bridge and look to move elsewhere.

Speaking in an interview with CaughtOffside, former Reds striker Stan Collymore claimed he has spoken to 'two very reliable people' who suggest that a move to Liverpool is 'very much on'.

But the Reds now reportedly face competition to secure the 24-year-old's signature.

Rivals 'enter chase to sign Liverpool target Mount'

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are now involved in the battle to sign Mount, who has recorded 36 senior caps for England.

The fact that the Magpies have money to spend - and they are dubbed as having 'the deepest pockets in world football' - could aid them, although it is claimed by the same source that they have to be cautious when it comes to Financial Fair Play (FFP).

However, it is said that Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus all hold an interest in swooping for Mount if Newcastle decide to look at other options.

However, Italian giants Juve may be seen as a less attractive option for Mount if they do not qualify for next season's Champions League. Massimiliano Allegri's side are currently 12 points off the automatic qualification spots in Serie A, with 12 games to play.

The club received a 15-point deduction earlier in the season after being found guilty of capital gain violations - although they deny wrongdoing and have appealed the sanction.
