"Good time to get out" - Man Utd legend says it makes "complete sense" Liverpool's owners are looking to sell

Gary Neville has expressed his thoughts on Liverpool's current ownership situation.

Man United legend Gary Neville believes that it makes "complete sense" for Fenway Sports Group to want to sell Liverpool, after reports emerged that they are inviting offers for the club.

The report came from David Ornstein of The Athletic on Monday morning, shortly after the conclusion of the Champions League last 16 draw.

Ornstein claims that a sale deck has been produced for parties interested in purchasing the club.

FSG then released a statement, claiming they have previously said they would 'consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club'.

FSG, and its principal owner, John W Henry, bought the club for £300 million in 2010 from previous owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

In that time, they have overseen the club winning eight trophies, including one Premier League and one Champions League title.

They also appointed Jurgen Klopp as manager in 2015.

Klopp's current squad, as per data from CIES Football Observatory, has been assembled at a cost of £670 million.

However, the club's ownership has been criticised in recent times by fans, particularly because of their decision to enter the ill-fated European Super League.

Liverpool have also been unable to match the spending of other footballing superpowers such as Man City and PSG in recent times - something Klopp alluded to in a recent press conference.

And ex-United right-back Neville has explained why he believes now is the right time for FSG to sell.

Gary Neville on Liverpool ownership

Speaking on the latest edition of The Overlap Fan Debate, Neville stated: "I said five months ago that the Manchester United owners have to sell the club, because they need the cash to redevelop the training and stadium, like what Liverpool are doing.

"But Chelsea's valuation of £4.25bn [the amount Todd Boehly spent to acquire the club] will only last for 12-18 months before people realise that the club aren't making any profit."

He added: "It makes complete sense for the Liverpool owners to want to sell the club, as they don't have the money to compete with the other clubs in the league.

"They've developed the stadium, they've got Jurgen Klopp as manager, and if the Chelsea valuation is now set as a benchmark for other clubs, the owners are thinking that now is a good time to get out.

"The Glazer family at Manchester United may be thinking the same thing, about getting out now as they need the cash, but the difference with them is that some members of the family don't want to get rid of the club."

Gary Neville was speaking on The Overlap, in partnership with Sky Bet.
