Liverpool owners 'approached' by eighth-richest man alive in potential takeover bid

He is worth $67.1 billion more than Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.

Liverpool have been approached by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani regarding a potential takeover, according to reports.

Last week, it was revealed that Fenway Sports Group would be willing to sell Liverpool after 12 years at the helm.

FSG is said to have already presented a full sales pitch to potential suitors and are interested in offers.

Ambani, ranked as the eighth-richest man alive by Forbes has already enquired about the club per The Mirror.

It's believed FSG would be willing to part with Liverpool for around $4 billion. That price tag wouldn't put off sports fan Ambani, a key figure in the Indian sporting world.

The 65-year-old owns the IPL cricket franchise Mumbai Indians, while he also played a vital role in setting up India's football Super League in 2013.

Ambani would be willing to 'pump millions' into the transfer market to help Liverpool close the gap on Manchester City.

City have won four of the last five Premier League titles, with Liverpool's triumph in 2020 being the only outlier.

In fact, Ambani's net worth is a reported $93.1 billion. That is $67.1 billion more than City owner Sheikh Mansour.

It's expected Ambani will have to fight off other investments from the Middle East as well as the USA should he want to take control of the Reds.

Since purchasing Liverpool from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks, FSG have overseen the most successful period in Liverpool's modern history.

They hired Jurgen Klopp in 2015, who won the Champions League in 2019 before their first Premier League title a year later.

Last season saw Liverpool add the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to their trophy cabinet. They've also reached an additional two Champions League finals in losing efforts to Real Madrid.

Klopp was asked about any potential takeover bid earlier this week, stressing he would remain committed to the club even if a change of ownership was to take place.

He said: "What I read was they are looking for investors and that makes sense. A good idea, I like that. It didn't distract the preparation at all. The players didn't ask me but if they want to ask me I can tell them everything.

"For me it means nothing. Whatever happens, I really like how we work together with our owners but if that would change I'm committed to the club obviously. As far as I know they are looking for investors and I thought that makes sense."

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League table following a 3-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday.
