"Some of the Liverpool lads said..." - Bournemouth star reveals he was told during shock win over the Reds

Adam Smith has revealed what Liverpool's players told him in Bournemouth's shock victory at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Bournemouth pulled off a huge upset to beat Liverpool 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal from Philip Billing.

The crushing result for Liverpool came less than a week after their 7-0 victory over Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp's side looked out of sorts throughout the match and their performance was summed up by a shocking penalty miss from Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool were awarded the spot kick with around 20 minutes remaining when the ball struck Smith's arm from a Diogo Jota header.

The handball initially wasn't given but referee John Brooks changed his decision and awarded a penalty after being instructed to view the pitchside monitor.

Salah stepped up but fired his spot kick well wide of the goal, as Bournemouth held on to a secure crucial victory which moved them out of the relegation places.

Smith reveals chat with Liverpool players

Speaking after the match, Smith revealed that Liverpool's players had told him that they were fortunate to be awarded the penalty kick.

"Even some of the Liverpool lads said it was a bit harsh," Smith told BT Sport.

"I am jumping and I can't see the ball. I don't know how I'm meant to stop that. I jumped with my hands, I think my arms were down.

"Maybe a little bit of justice that they missed it. A bit of luck. I was happy with that."

It was a memorable afternoon for Smith, who joined Steve Cook as Bournemouth's leading appearance-maker in the Premier League, having played 168 times in the top flight for the Cherries.

Bournemouth will be hoping to build on their victory when they return to Premier League action against Aston Villa next Saturday.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have the daunting task of facing Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the Reds trailing 5-2 from the first leg of their round of 16 clash.
