Lionel Messi showed why he's a world-class captain as he gave a brilliant post-match interview following Argentina's big win over Mexico.

Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 on Saturday to secure three huge points in Group B and keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Messi opened the scoring as he struck a superb drive into the bottom corner, then turned provider as he set up Enzo Fernandez who curled home a stunning goal.

The 35-year-old led his team to victory in a must-win match and he continued to show off his leadership qualities when he spoke after the match.

Messi won the 'Player of the Match' award, but a reporter asked him if he could give it to a teammate, who would it be and why.

However, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar refused to single out a specific player as he acknowledged the whole team in a great show of comradery.

A video of the interview has been shared online, accompanied with the caption: "This is why Messi is the greatest captain of all time."

Messi said: "To the whole team, because we all played to win. As I said, this was a very tough match. We had to win it.

"It's not easy to play under such conditions. The team played superbly. All players that started and came off the bench.

"That's how it should be. We all play a key role. You come on; you do your job."

Messi added: "Now we need to think about our next step, we've got a long road ahead of us.

"We did the job, but there's one more game."

Messi's leadership qualities are often overlooked, but he's shown time and time again that he's capable of leading from the front.

Argentina, meanwhile, are currently second in their group, with three points on the board as they face Poland next Wednesday in their final group stage game.
