Jose Mourinho apparently didn't throw his Premier League medal away

Mourinho was pictured throwing away a Premier League medal after winning his second title in England, but apparently it wasn't his medal.

Jose Mourinho has been accused of throwing someone else's Premier League winner's medal into the crowd, following his success with Chelsea back in 2006.

Mourinho is known for a great many legendary moments as a manager, from running down the touchline at Old Trafford, to calling himself the Special One, to running onto the pitch at the Nou Camp and everything in between.

One of his perhaps under appreciated iconic moments during his time in charge of Chelsea came at the end of the 2005/06 season.

Mourinho had won the league title in his first season with the Blues, the year earlier, and repeated the trick to become the first manager other than Sir Alex Ferguson to win back-to-back Premier Leagues.

They secured the championship by defeating Fergie' Manchester United team 3-0 on April 29th, with two games of the campaign still to go, which the Blues would go on to lose both.

After the game, Mourinho and his team were presented with the trophy and their medals, and the manager famously decided to throw his medal into the crowd.

"The medal was for everybody but I think the person in the crowd who got the medal is a lucky guy who goes home with a fantastic memory or goes to eBay and makes a fortune," the Portuguese manager said at the time.

However, according to one Chelsea insider it wasn't actually his own medal that was thrown into the crowd on the day, but that of a player.

Neil Barnett, known as a spy and insider on social media, took to Twitter to claim it was actually Robert Huth's medal, but the German centre back wasn't at the game, as he attempted to force a move away from west London.

Mourinho was certainly right about the medal making someone plenty of money in the future, with a fan selling at auction for £16,800 back in 2010.

It might not have made quite so much money if the buyer had known that it wasn't actually the former Porto boss' medal to begin with, although it's still a Premier League winner's medal so maybe Steven Gerrard purchased it.

Huth had helped the Blues win their first league title in 50 years, when they were successful in their first campaign under the now 59-year-old Roma boss.

He was again part of the team that played the second season but didn't play as much football, and eventually secured a move to Middlesbrough that summer.

As well as his success in London, Huth would go on to pick up a third champion's medal, or at least a second, when he helped Leicester City win the league in 2016.

It's been some time since Mourinho won a league winners medal, although he still won the Europa League Conference last season, the first manager to do so.

These days he's more likely to be seen in a grime music video than he is to be seen with a Premier League winner's medal, throwing it or not.

SPORTbible did reach out to Robert Huth and then Chelsea captain John Terry to confirm the story but have not heard comment back from either at time of writing.
