Jim Beglin Issues Apology To Manchester City Fans Following "Verbal Error" On Commentary vs Chelsea

"In no way was my verbal error today intended to cause City fans any offence."

Jim Beglin has issued an apology to Manchester City and their supporters after he accidentally called the club's stadium 'the Emptyhad' during this weekend's clash against Chelsea.

It was an underwhelming game, to say the least, but Pep Guardiola's side managed to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 13 points thanks to a wonderful strike from Kevin De Bruyne.

Chelsea will be disappointed with their efforts. They failed to attempt a shot in the first half and struggled to break down the league leaders for large spells throughout.

Overall, it was a dull first-half performance from both sides. In fact, the biggest talking point from the opening 45 minutes came from co-commentator Beglin, who had an unfortunate moment in the gantry.

In the 34th minute, he can be heard saying: "You can hear the annoyance around the Emptyhad because..." before immediately realising his slip of the tongue.

The former Republic of Ireland defender, who spent six years at Liverpool during his playing days, has now released a statement on his official Twitter account.

"I have the greatest respect for Manchester City Football Club," he wrote. "In no way was my verbal error today intended to cause City fans any offence."

In the past, City have been mocked by rival fans for their lack of support inside the Etihad.

In fact, back in September, after the Blues opened their Champions League campaign with a resounding win over RB Leipzig, manager Pep Guardiola pleaded with fans to come to the Etihad for their upcoming clash against Southampton.

"I'd like more people to come on Saturday," he told BT Sport after the full-time whistle. "We will be tired. Southampton are so dangerous. I invite all our people to come 3pm to watch our game..."
