Germany's Kai Havertz walked away with the Player of the Match award after an impressive cameo against Costa Rica, although he didn't look too pleased with his latest prize.

The 23-year-old, who ran the show after replacing David Raum in the 67th minute, equalised for Hansi Flick's side after second-half goals from Yeltsin Tejeda and Juan Pablo Vargas gave the underdogs a surprise lead.

Havertz then gave Germany the lead in the 85th minute before Werder Bremen striker Niclas Fullkrug made it 4-2.

Despite a late surge, it wasn't enough for the Germans as a controversial goal from Ao Tanaka sealed Japan's place in the knockout stages in dramatic fashion.

Havertz, however, can say he managed to make an impact in their final Group E game and to celebrate his performance, he was awarded the Player of the Match award.

So how does the award work? Well, the Budweiser Player of the Match trophy is awarded by the public on the FIFA+ website.

Fans can submit their vote between the 60th and 88th minute of every World Cup game, with the rule being a maximum one entry per person, per World Cup match.

Havertz managed to scoop Thursday night's prize but it's clear he wasn't in the mood to pose for a picture. To be fair, you can't blame the guy.

One fan commented on the picture, saying: "Kai Havertz looks Absolutely BUZZING with his Player of The Match Award," while another said: "This must be the most depressing MOTM award ever awarded in football. He didn't not want to be there."

A third wrote: "Something tells me that Kai Havertz isn’t too arsed about his MOTM award…"

Japan, meanwhile, managed to secure a historic 2-1 win against Spain at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan, while four-time champions Germany were knocked out at the first hurdle.

Thoughts on the game? Do you think Havertz should have been given more time to shine by Flick?
