England fans are worried about Gareth Southgate remaining their manager following the emergence of a damning statistic.

The English FA confirmed in a statement on Sunday morning that Southgate would remain in his position until Euro 2024 at least.

Speculation surrounding the 52-year-old's future intensified after he told bosses he needed time to consider his position in the wake of England's World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

He'll instead take charge of his fourth major tournament with the Three Lions since taking the job in 2016.

A statement from FA CEO Mark Bullingham read: "We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and (assistant) Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now."

Southgate helped England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals plus the final of Euro 2020 before elimination in the last 8 in Qatar.

Despite England's strong tournament form in recent years, some believe Southgate is holding back the current generation.

It's been claimed Southgate's opponents in international competitions are on the weaker side.

During a recent appearance on talkSPORT, broadcaster Adam Catterall laid out the statistics which supporters agree with.

Catterall said: "I got this stat from Rory Jennings, who also works at talkSPORT. It's a phenomenal stat.

"In Southgate's tenure, we’ve played teams ranked in the top 10 on 24 occasions. During his tenure, we've beaten four of them. That's sackable. That is not good enough!"

England were beaten by Croatia four years ago, Italy in 2021 and reigning world champions France earlier this month.

Southgate's navigated a tricky patch over the summer after England's underwhelming Nations League campaign.

The nadir was relegation to League B and a 4-0 defeat to Hungary in June, which saw the team booed by fans inside Molineux.

England players have been supportive of Southgate and believe they can win a trophy under him.

They'll have the chance to do that in 18 months time, likely as one of the favourites to win Euro 2024 out in Germany.
